Build a party to take on Starmer, austerity and war

Trade unions must lead - Fight for socialist change

For all those battling against cuts to public services, fighting against low pay, protesting against atrocities in Gaza and in other wars internationally, there exists a huge opportunity to build a new political party to strengthen our struggles.

Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana’s announcement of their intention to bring a new party, ‘Your Party’, into existence has sparked enormous enthusiasm – over 700,000 people signing up to stay informed.

The Socialist Party has long fought for the working class to have its own political party, independent of the capitalist bosses. And so we are enthusiastically campaigning for the new party to be built with the trade unions – existing mass organisations of the working class, with over six million members – at its core.

The strike wave gave a glimpse of the strength of the trade unions, organising workers to collectively fight in their interests – cutting across attempts by right-wing politicians and the capitalist bosses to divide us.

Corbyn’s time as Labour leader showed how the capitalists will do all they can to destroy any chance of the working class having a party of its own. It also showed the huge enthusiasm for socialist policies for free education, nationalisation of utilities, and mass council house building, for example.

By fighting for policies like these, addressing the needs of the working class, the new party can broaden its support further still. To overcome what would inevitably be vicious opposition from the capitalist class to policies threatening their profits, the new party would need to go further by adopting a programme of nationalisation of major corporations and banks under democratic workers’ control, mobilising the working class in support.

In all the debates and discussions around ‘Your Party’, about how it is formed and what it should stand for, Socialist Party members will be fighting for a new mass party of the working class, fighting for socialist change. Join us!
